Nigerians can now buy tickets online for Lagos-Ibadan and Warri-Itakpe rail lines, thanks to the E-ticket platform launched by the Federal Government on Monday.
The platform aims to improve access to transportation services, end ticket racketeering and eliminate revenue leakage, which have been plaguing the rail sector.
The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, said at the launch event in Abuja that the government is ready to leverage technology to boost its revenue from internal sources. He said the platform will also enhance the security and convenience of passengers.
He announced that the platform will be operational from November 1st, 2023 and can be accessed via this link.
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Fidet Okharia, expressed his happiness about the project, saying it will increase the revenue from the routes and end unethical practices. He said the revenue from the Warri-Itakpe route has already risen to N28 million per week due to the anticipation of the E-ticketing.
He also revealed that 14 staff members have been sanctioned for ticket racketeering.
The E-ticketing contract was approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2023 at the cost of N1.96 billion with an expected revenue of N176bn in ten years, The PUNCH reports.
